PTPink Toughness
Inspired by my mother

For women starting over,
and mothers doing it alone

When I was five, my 21-year-old mother rescued me from danger in a semi-truck. She raised me alone, worked low-wage jobs with limited English, and reinvented herself three times. I became a doctor because of her. This site is for every woman like her.

Her story, in three reinventions

My mother is the hero of my book

First, she left an abusive marriage and got her son back. Second, after years of low-wage work, she trained as an ultrasound technician, practicing scans on me when I was a teenager. Third, in the autumn of her life, she became a paid consultant to home builders, using everything she had noticed while working for them.

Every diploma I earned, I walked off the stage and handed to her. In my mind, I did not earn those degrees. We did.

"My mother is now your mother."

Not everyone is blessed with a mother who believes in them. In my book I wrote that if yours could not, mine is now yours. She used to tell me: believe in you, and want it badly enough.

Why pink?

Because strength comes in every color. My mother also survived cancer while I was in medical school. Pink is for survivors, for mothers, and for every woman who is tougher than anyone gives her credit for.
